I Am With You ©2025 is inspired by Isaiah 41:5-10

In this image, I wanted the fig tree to look unremarkable, surrounded by the hands of the Gardener reaching down to lovingly massage the soil. The sleeves contain patterning of simplified visual references to everything a plant needs to not only survive, but to thrive. Starting close to the roots and moving upward, the patterns include water, air, sunlight, nutrients, and space. The emphasis in this image is on what is happening below the surface, in the depths of the dirt. The roots stretch toward the hands of the Gardener as the specks of dirt seem to also image the stars of the vast universe. Within us, despite what we produce, despite what can be seen at the surface, we contain multitudes. We bear the image of God, and our mere existence makes us worthy of Sabbath and the loving arms of the Gardener reaching out to provide us with everything we need.

The angel holds Joseph as his dream unfolds in quilted vignettes. At the top, Mary gazes ahead, pondering her role in welcoming the Son of God into the world. Below, a squishy baby Jesus peacefully rests as his glory shines on a longing world eager to soak up the light of Emmanuel. Just as a dream holds layers of meaning, this image reflects more than the sum of its parts…

Open Table ©2022

As a clergy person, I strive to make sure ALL are welcome in communal faith spaces. I have seen first hand how churches have unknowingly kept people from fully participating in worship, and it is particularly painful when that lack of intentionality affects your family. Since my aunt, LeeAnn Love, was diagnosed with celiac disease over eight years ago, she has been able to safely partake in communion only three times. She holds a lot of grief around being excluded from one of the most foundational rituals of her faith.

“Open Table” is a meditation on what a more open, abundant table might look and feel like. At the center of the image are the elements of communion, bread and wine. The light of Christ radiates from the bread as it reaches, without barrier, the cupped hands of those ready to receive. Shining from the center are the beginnings of gluten free plants, including rice and buckwheat grains. Bursting forth from corners of the image are various plants that source gluten free ingredients for communion bread, including: buckwheat flowers, amaranth, quinoa, millet, and sorghum. This image represents Christ’s ever expanding welcome, as well as the abundance of resources that are available for us to create more open and welcome spaces for everyone to participate in worship and the sacraments.
