Modern Christian Art faux stained glass window design

RPC Faux Stained Glass Windows

The Leadership at Roswell Presbyterian Church reached out to me with the of creating four 15ft tall “stained glass” windows. Their idea for the designs was for each of the windows to represent the four-fold pattern of liturgy (God gathers, God speaks, We respond, God sends). I had a complete blast laying out the composition of each of the windows and drawing in imagery from scripture that represented the theme of each window. Once I sent them the design files, they printed the images on vinyl mounted them in wooden frames, and backlit the designs with LED fixtures. The result windows turned out amazing. Read more about the imagery in each window below.

Artist’s Statement

  • Top image: God's hands form life out of earth; we are the work of God's hands. We are created, gathered together, shaped, and molded throughout our lives by God's loving hands. Genesis 2:1-24  |  Isaiah 64:8

Middle Image: The Holy Spirit's descent Pentecost, where people were gathered together and received the gifts of the Spirit.

Bottom image: We are gathered under God's wing like a mother hen who gathers her chicks. Luke 13:31-35

  • Top image: Traditional hand positioning representing God's voice breaking into the world.

Middle image: God speaks from the generative fire of a burning bush, which invites Moses into his calling and leads the liberation of God's people. Exodus 3:1-12

Bottom image: God's self revelation is through the person of Jesus— his life, death and resurrection. Jesus holds his hand in the positioning of what is referred to as a Trinitarian Blessing. Jesus' ring finger and pinky are touching his thumb, symbolizing the persons of the Trinity, and two fingers are held up, representing the two natures of Christ, Divine and human.

  • Top image: Hands offer up and receive the elements of communion.

Middle Image: A woman pours out perfume on Jesus' feet in an extravagant response to God's faithfulness, and a preparation for Christ's path to the cross. John 12:1-3  |  Luke 7:36-38

Bottom image: Miriam dances with her tambourine in response to God's incredible deliverance of the Israelites out of slavery. Exodus 15:20-21

  • Top Image: God's hand points us forward, encouraging those gathered to join in the work of bringing the Kindom of God to Earth. We are to be God's disciples, fishers of people.

Middle Image: Jesus commissions the disciples to "go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always to the end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20

Bottom Image: Olive branches incircle the globe. God sends those gathered out of the worship space and into a broken world that needs God's peace.
