While in a cocoon, a caterpillar does not simply sprout wings, bust out of its enclosure, and fly away. The caterpillar dissolves into a pile of goo. The caterpillar becomes completely undone, completely unrecognizable, and then is rebuilt into something entirely new. I was fortunate enough to hear a conversation of African American faculty and alumni from my seminary. During this discussion, Dr. Lisa M. Weaver offered advice, particularly to white allies. She said to be kenotic. To empty ourselves of our own will and to be fully receptive to God’s will. To altogether examine all that has made us who we are- entwined with white supremacy and systemic racism- and to pour it all out. My prayer is that myself and other white people become completely disintegrated from the structures that benefit us and dissolve into goo so we can be re-formed into who God intended us to be. Let us not try to take shortcuts, gluing wings on and trying to break out of this work prematurely. May we sit in and wrestle with the ugliness, in the difficultly of self examination and not emerge from this work until we are all free to fly.
