The Vanderbilt Divinity Library references this image for Ordinary Time of the Revised Common Lectionary.
An image representing Christ's sacrifice and our call to protect Creation.
It was previously thought that pelicans would go to drastic lengths to feed their young— even to the point of offering their own blood. Consequently, in Medieval Christian art and beyond, pelicans have been used in stained glass windows and iconography to represent Christ’s sacrifice. This image connects the visual metaphor of Christ’s sacrifice to the beauty and particularity of the wetlands of Southern Louisiana—calling the viewer to care and sacrifice for this endangered environment.
